Even before I could read, I would remember the sounds of the mornings: when my dad would open the door to the flat to collect his ordered daily The Straits Times, turn on the light in the living room, and proceed to read it. He doesn’t know it (maybe he will now) but this is why it gives me great pleasure to be the one paying for his newspaper subscription now. It had been so much a part of my childhood.
Dad would also subscribe to and read Reader’s Digest – which I too, came to love. One of the first things I began reading regularly when I learned to read was the comics in the newspapers. I liked opening the papers and reading it alongside my Dad. This expanded to the TV program of the day so I would stop asking him what was playing when… the Life section, and then the rest of the paper.
There wasn’t the internet, or computer games back then. There weren’t many programs on TV either. My sister and I were encouraged to read as much as we could – I was told this was my “job”: to study and read.
We pretty much spent every minute we were not studying, reading story books, or playing with our toys. It was an idyllic and sheltered childhood for the most part. I would frequently read during and through meals. Later, the only electronic device we had was the shared family Brick Game.
I love books because they transported you places, exposed you to new ideas, lands, cultures, people, and knowledge you wouldn’t know otherwise. To me, each book is a promise land of hope, adventure, and learning. Books are magic, my friend, and I would go as far to say, my first love.
As a child, I fantasized about being an author – having a book to my name. After my first book, it became a matter of reaching and helping even more people through my books, and leaving a legacy through my body of work. Books are one of the important mediums which I reach out to people – and actually it is my favourite way.
