How Testosterone Affects Sex Drive

Posted On: June 1, 2024

Testosterone is a hormone that is mainly associated with our sex drive. It is found in the bodies of both humans and animals. It is produced by the adrenal cortex, which is present in the testes in people with penises and ovaries in ovary owners. Whilst testosterone is considered to be primary sex hormone for penis owners, it plays a role in sexuality for vulva owners too.

As we mentioned earlier, most people associate testosterone with sex drive. This hormone is indeed present in the penis owners in larger quantities.  It plays a significant role in the male body like regulating fertility, red blood cell production, muscle mass, and fat distribution. You may consult your general practitioner to know more about this hormone.

Testosterone is produced in the ovaries owners along with hormone estrogen. The body’s fat tissues also produce this hormone. Although it is generated in a small amount, it is required for a healthy reproductive system and also sex life. Both testosterone and estrogen are responsible for growth, maintenance, and development of reproductive tissues.

The right balance of testosterone ensures a healthy sex life. Any imbalance in its production leads to a lot of problems in both men and women which include low libido, lesser muscle mass, and bone density.

Testosterone and sex drive

Testosterone affects sex drive for all people. In owners of penises, it influences the production of sperm in the testes. Low or high level of testosterone will result in low sperm count. Thus, their fertility is directly related to testosterone.

During infancy, all of us have the same levels of testosterone. As we approach puberty, penis owners start having larger levels of it in their body which affects their muscle mass and increased size of bones.

With age, the production of testosterone decreases which in turn, decreases libido. Owners of penises who complain of erectile dysfunction or less interest in sex should consult a medical practitioner to determine the actual problem. Low level of testosterone can be treated with hormone replacement therapy.

Those with a higher level of testosterone have a higher libido. High level of testosterone in vulva owners leads to the appearance of facial hair and weight gain.

During menopause, testosterone level dips which cause vaginal dryness, itching, and low interest in sex. Thus, to have a healthy sex life, both men and women should maintain the proper balance of this hormone in their bodies.

If you start losing interest in sex or find it difficult to maintain your erection or if women find sex painful, it is advisable to consult a medical practitioner. Your GP may refer you to a urologist. Know more about testosterone and maintain its right balance to lead a healthy life.
