Intimate Relationships

“An important seminar for men who want to love and respect women – and a rare chance to talk about positive models of male sexuality.

As a straight, cisgender, male who spent their childhood in a conservative part of Australia, I had limited opportunities growing up to learn about, or even discuss, the sex education topics needed to develop a positive view of sexuality. As a result, I went through most of my life largely ignorant (and I still have a lot to learn) about the key skills and knowledge needed to have a mutually healthy and fulfilling sex life with any potential partners.

I attended Dr. Lee’s seminar eager to learn, but with relatively little idea of what would be discussed. The event format itself was a friendly interactive talk, with audiences welcome to ask questions throughout the lecture without fear of being shamed or judged. Important topics were raised, such as having good communication skills with your partner, getting informed consent, and making sure everyone gets appropriate aftercare.

After the seminar ended, I found myself wishing that these classes would be made widely available to young adults, perhaps as an optional course at universities or TAFE colleges, as it would have helped me, and other people, from having a lot of sexual hang ups earlier in life.

It’s important to acknowledge that I can only write from my relatively privileged perspective as a straight cisgender male, which this seminar caters to (apparently a version for women is also available). On the other hand:

  •  Lots of men experience problems with their relationships and sex lives which may be different from what women experience;
  •  Theres an abundance of myths and bad advice floating around online (and in society generally) about how men should act in a relationship, a lot based on notions of toxic masculinity;
  •  Not all men have trusted friends or family members that they can honestly discuss these issues with; and
  • Helping men develop or improve their sense of positive sexuality helps both men and women.

Given these circumstances, I would encourage men who were at all interested, or curious, about developing a more positive sexual version of themselves to attend this seminar. If nothing else, you’ll be in safe space with other people who likely have similar concerns to you, and it will be a good opportunity to ask questions that you might otherwise be too afraid
to ask.” – Dennis, Melbourne, 14 April 2024
