It’s not often you get approached by a columnist for Forbes Magazines to review his book. CEO of BodeTree Christopher Myers had saw that I reviewed “Start with Why” and asked if I’d be interested. Having started to turn away book review requests, I agreed to review his first book Enlightened Entrepreneurship: How to Start and Scale your Business without losing your Sanity because I was intrigued what enlightened entrepreneurship might mean.
His request was in Oct 2016, and I am sorry to admit it took me all this time to get to reading it. Enlightened Entrepreneurship was actually an easy-read, divided into three parts: Starting Your Business, Scaling Your Business, and Staying Sane. Each section had relevant, well thought-out smaller chapters which were essentially his collection of essays, originally published in Forbes magazine. Myers wove in his honest account of building his company—BodeTree, an online financial management tool for small businesses through it all.
Myers does not pretend to know-it-all or provide a how-to, and instead shares from his personal stories of accomplishments and failures. This includes decision making, planning, and funding. I particularly liked the last part where Myers talks about managing anxiety and depression. I experienced burnout two years ago in my practice, and know how responsibility overload is no fun.
At the core of Enlightened Entrepreneurshiphttps://www.amazon.com/Enlightened-Entrepreneurship-business-without-losing/dp/0692750010, the philosophy is all about balance: finding balance between profits and people and between ambition and humility. Myers shared how he learned everything, good or bad, starts in the mind. As one focuses on balance, self-awareness, and humility, those traits will become part of how we run our businesses. I recommend this book as Myers has masterfully presented simple solutions to help fellow entrepreneurs find success doing the things we love.
