I interviewed Pamela Yee who is a full-time artist. What exactly does she do?
1) What do you do?
I’m a fulltime artist and I enjoy drawing whimsical portraits of people and animals with ink on paper.
2) Why do you do what you do?
I enjoy getting lost in the details as the drawings take shape in black and white with fine lines and nuances. My art connects me to a deep source of peace as it connects me to the people I draw and who love my artwork. Drawing keeps me alive and awakens me to the incredible beauty of the world that is hidden in plain sight.
3) What are common reasons people come to you?
I recall with fondness the stall I used to have at Pasar Bella, where I spent many hours connecting with curious passer-bys, and playful children. The intriguing stories they share about their lives and experiences became the subject of my artwork which in turn inspires more people.
People come to me because they feel joy in experiencing my art or else it invokes a sense of peace in them, the same peace i feel drawing the pictures.
4) What are your future plans?
Apart from planning more exhibitions and events, I would love to publish an illustrated book of stories for children. I also hope to do more traveling in the future to exhibit my works overseas to a larger audience.
5) Any advice for readers?
Believe in yourself and your strengths and passion, for it is your unique contribution to the world. Take as much time as is needed to find what your purpose is, and once you find out, achieve consistency in your endeavors with discipline and strength.
